Consumer Advocate Hails Island Pipeline Ruling

The lawyer who represented a coalition of consumer groups in a hearing about the Vancouver Island natural gas pipeline has hailed a decision released today by the B.C. Court of Appeal.

“The Court of Appeal’s decision will help ensure the long-term viability of the Vancouver Island natural gas system, and is good news for the Island’s consumers,” said Jim Quail of the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre.

Skinny Phone Books Spark Consumer Complaint to CRTC

Consumer advocates in Vancouver filed a formal complaint at the CRTC against Telus today for refusing to produce district-wide Greater Vancouver phone books. Telus plans to only provide sub-district white pages within the local calling area.

“Telus is trying to fatten its bottom line by chiseling on the services it gives its customers,” said lawyer Jim Quail of the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre. “People in Greater Vancouver use their phones to place local calls all over the district. If our phone books don’t cover the whole local-calling area, we will wind up paying Telus for each 411 call beyond our local municipalities.” Quail said that the so-called “superpages” fall short of mandatory terms and conditions set by the CRTC for Telus’ monopoly phone services.
