Consumer Advocate Pans Duke Point Decision, Predicts Appeal

The lawyer representing a coalition of consumer organizations has criticized today’s decision by the BC Utilities Commission to approve BC Hydro’s proposal for a thermal generating plant at Duke Point, near Nanaimo.

“I find it hard to understand how the Commission could ignore the objections from every organization representing BC Hydro customers, and approve this high-risk, high-cost mega-project that makes so little sense,” said Jim Quail, a staff lawyer with the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre. “If it goes ahead, everyone in BC will pay for this mistake for a long, long time.”

Anti-poverty groups across BC complain to Ombudsman about unfairness at Ministry of Human Resources

The BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre, on behalf of a coalition of 15 organizations from communities across BC, has filed a systemic complaint with the Ombudsman about the Ministry of Human Resources because of concerns about unfair practices experienced by poor people who need assistance from the Ministry.

“We hope that by bringing our concerns to the Ombudsman, we will be able to resolve these problems in a way that is efficient and effective for both British Columbians and for the Ministry of Human Resources” said Susan Henry, an advocate with First United Church in Vancouver.
