A lawyer representing electricity consumers has criticized BC Hydro for trying to avoid a public hearing on a massive series of long-term private-sector energy purchase agreements that would hoist the average customer bill by over 8%.

The Crown Corporation filed an application with the BC Utilities Commission on September 5, seeking approval of 38 contracts with private-sector electricity generation companies that would lock customers in for decades to come. Hydro is now seeking rubber-stamp approval of the contracts with no public review of the impact on consumers.
