Working closely with our client groups, BCPIAC has represented people with low incomes and other disadvantaged groups for the last 20 years. Our work in anti-poverty and social justice law focuses on civil and administrative law problems that affect the poor, people with disabilities, and other disadvantaged groups. These problems might include issues relating to income assistance, disability benefits, residential tenancy, employment insurance, employment standards, Canada Pension Plan, and credit or debt issues. These problems often affect a person’s ability to feed, clothe and provide shelter to him or her self and family.
In BC, legal aid representation is not available for individuals with poverty related legal issues. This presents an even bigger challenge to ensuring that the law upholds fundamental human rights for all Canadians, and makes systemic challenges that much more important.
