A significant part of BCPIAC’s mandate is to advocate on behalf of disadvantaged groups to obtain access to justice and equality before the law.
Our work in this area involves helping people to assert fundamental human rights that are protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the “Charter”), the BC Human Rights Code, and the Canadian Human Rights Act. We also rely on rights guaranteed under statute, in international law or through principles of administrative law.
BCPIAC advances these interests through a variety of means, including bringing cases before the courts and administrative tribunals, acting as a legal resource to community groups, providing education to members of the public on poverty and equality law issues, and researching and promoting various law reform initiatives.
