What is BCPIAC?
The BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre (BCPIAC) is a small, not-for-profit law office located in downtown Vancouver, BC. More specifically, our office is located on the unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Over the past 40+ years, BCPIAC’s mission has been to strengthen the voices of those affected by the actions of regulated utilities (for example: BC Hydro, FortisBC Inc., FortisBC Energy, PNG, Creative Energy, Corix, and even ICBC), large business interests, and government.
At the moment, we do this through our advocacy on behalf of individuals with utility-related issues and through our representation of residential customers’ interests in hearings before the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC).
Our Vision
The world we live in is changing and changing fast. We believe part of the way forward is recognizing that, in the 21st century, access to energy is not a luxury or a privilege, but a basic need and a human right.
People living in BC that don’t have consistent access to safe, reliable, clean and affordable energy already face any number of serious challenges: just imagine trying to live your life as you do right now without access to power.
How do you stay warm in the winter? How do you store and cook your food safely? How do you study for school, find a job, or even just clean your clothes?
Our quest is to ensure universal and affordable access to the energy people in this province need to live, learn, and grow here.
